Say, ‘ga, goo, goo, blrb-hhh’, I’m going to take your picture…

A 2013 report in the Daily Telegraph observed that UK parents of new-borns uploaded their child’s image to social media within an average of 57.9 minutes of delivery. The most popular platform was Facebook, followed by Instagram (purchased by Facebook in 2012 for more than $1 billion), then Flickr. Marc Phelps of a baby photo agency that commissioned a survey into the trend noted that one in five do so in order to ‘better other parents’ photos’.

Other popular reasons for parents sharing pictures on social media included: to express love for their children (49 per cent), because it was a good location to store images (34 per cent), and as a record of their child’s early years for the future (28 per cent). Only 6 per cent of respondents said they never uploaded pictures of their children to social media, while 64 per cent said they did so at least three times a week.

The Pew Research Centre reports that 57 per cent of all US adults and nearly three out of four teenagers are on Facebook. At the time of writing, Instagram had more than 180 million mobile application users. It also rolled out Instagram Direct, which encourages users to send private photos and messages, with whomever they want to share information.
